Trophy Hoisting (Pic Spam)

Ernie, Dolly and Marcel may sound like characters from European Sesame Street, but there are among this past week’s group of trophy hoisters. Gulbis overcame his recent lackluster results to get an impressive win over Mardy Fish, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at the Farmers Classic in LA.

Malisse & Knowles also scored a victory in LA, taking home these stylish but functional trophy pitchers.

Dolgopolov won a very, err, stylish piece of hardware in Umag over Marin Cilic. At least it matches his shirt?

Though Granollers definitely wins this week’s strangest looking trophy at Gstaad over Verdsasco…and that’s saying something.

Thankfully Fer knows that there’s nothing like a little bubbly to make ugly more attractive ;)

Fernando Verdasco: One Man Show

Fernando may not have played a major part in Spain’s win over USA at Davis Cup, but you would never know it from the draw press conference. Though he seemed a little bored at first, he did he try to entertain himself (and us?) in various ways to make the time go by…

First he tried to follow whatever it was that Albert Costa was talking about, but he was not thrilled at what he heard. Did he just learn then that he wasn’t playing the singles rubber? Did Albert threaten to confiscate his hair gel if he couldn’t contain his double faults?

WHAT??? I can haz hair gel?!?!

Girl, you the best!

Seriously, though Fernando got a major case of the giggles. Lord knows what he found so funny. Even Granollers, unofficial head cheerleader of the armada, was like, ‘Dude, seriously? Calm down.’

Verdasco even embarrassed his bestie Feli in front of the Bryans brothers. The forced smile on Feli’s face looks like he is in pain. Our emo Feli, how Fernando makes him suffer….

You can check out more pictures from the draw ceremony (including both Spain and USA) on the facebook page.

Seeds Scatter: Miami Results

Not sure if it was the heat, the humidity, or an overwhelming desire to move on to the clay court season, but there was a mass exodus of seeded players yesterday at the Sony Ericsson Open. It started off with Somdev Devvarman dismissing Milos Raonic 7-6(5), 7-5.

It was not a good day for Milos, who only got 51% of first serves in and double faulted 7 times. He has played a lot of tennis lately. Kid has got to be tired.

Nevertheless, this result should not be that all that surprising. Devvarman has been playing the best tennis of his career lately. A run to the top 50 cannot be far behind.
What was surprising was Andy Murray’s loss to Bogolomov Jr. To call Muzz’s 3rd straight loss a slump would be a bit of an understatement.
The loss to Baggy in Rotterdam was not that shocking. Marcos is a dangerous player who can beat anyone on any given day, and Andy was still getting over the loss in the Australian Open final. The loss last week at Indian Wells to Donald Young was a major upset, but we have been waiting for big things from Young for a long time. Could fairly be seen as Donald finally realizing his huge talent.
But losing to Bogolomov 6-1, 7-5? Bogo is not a young gun on the rise. He is a 27 year old veteran. His last big win was at the Australian Open over Gonzo in 2006!
Needless to say, Bogo was stoked about the win. Is that tat ovine or bovine? Yikes…
Enjoy the moment, dude. You got Isner next
In other upset news, some lesser-known Spaniards notched some wins. Andujar beat Verdasco 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. Are Fer losses really upsets at this point?
And Granollers defeated Wawrinka 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-3.
Note I did not call him Granola Bar. Anyone who bagels and takes out Stan deserves a little respect. For now.

Aw, Stan looks so sad there. All swaddled up like a sad baby. A sad, abandoned baby…*sniff*
