Feliciano Lopez: Matador (Video)

OK, not quite a matador. At least he’s got posing with the cape down. He can handle posing ;)

Fernando Verdasco: One Man Show

Fernando may not have played a major part in Spain’s win over USA at Davis Cup, but you would never know it from the draw press conference. Though he seemed a little bored at first, he did he try to entertain himself (and us?) in various ways to make the time go by…

First he tried to follow whatever it was that Albert Costa was talking about, but he was not thrilled at what he heard. Did he just learn then that he wasn’t playing the singles rubber? Did Albert threaten to confiscate his hair gel if he couldn’t contain his double faults?

WHAT??? I can haz hair gel?!?!

Girl, you the best!

Seriously, though Fernando got a major case of the giggles. Lord knows what he found so funny. Even Granollers, unofficial head cheerleader of the armada, was like, ‘Dude, seriously? Calm down.’

Verdasco even embarrassed his bestie Feli in front of the Bryans brothers. The forced smile on Feli’s face looks like he is in pain. Our emo Feli, how Fernando makes him suffer….

You can check out more pictures from the draw ceremony (including both Spain and USA) on the facebook page.

“The Ball is Much Faster Than the Court”: Armada DC Draw Presser Gems (Videos)

The draw ceremony for the Davis Cup draw was open to the public for $10, with all proceeds going to charity. As a bonus, they let the crowd stay for the press conference. Fuller post (with pics!) to come, but in the meantime, enjoys these gems from the Spanish players:

Verdasco on playing the Bryan brothers with Lopez. Even though they did not play, glad to know the boys thought that one out… “We are close to be twins.” There was never any doubt, Fer:

Ferrer on why the fast court was not going to be the most important factor:

True that, Daveed, true that

At Least Feli Was Happy to See Him

Now that is how you give a “come hither” gaze

This picture alone was worth the price of admission….

Bye, Rod

We all expected that the match between Roddick and Feliciano Lopez was going to be a tight one. But a straight sets loss to Deliciano (7-6(2), 7-6(2), 6-4), a player Andy has never lost to? Not so much. Yet Rod played that annoyingly passive style that has gotten him bounced from the last few slams, and Feli served lights out.

Well done, Princess. But you know that since you got this win, you have to roll over and lose in Austin next month, right? RIGHT?

So Close, Felite

Today Feliciano Lopez played not only one of the best matches of his season, but one of the best matches of his career. He made me remember why once upon a time, I was a fan of his. I remember a few years ago watching him in Wimbledon, and getting really excited about his game and the kind of player he could be. He has been a solid player, but has not exactly lived up to what I thought he could be. I have paid less attention to Feli of late. Too much focus on his appearance, his hair, his clothes, his emo attitude. An interesting side show, sure, but not someone whose tennis I could seriously follow.

But today there was a glimpse of the player Lopez could be. He stayed with Federer for the whole match both physically, banging down massive serves and slicing backhands, and, more importantly, mentally. In the 3rd set, when Feli got down 0-40 on his serve, I thought, well this is it. He played well, but he’ll get broken here and the match will be over. But no, he came back and held. He continuted to fight and got to the 3rd set tiebreak. He was not going to go down easily as we all expected. He was here to play.

The crowd started chanting, “Feli Feli Feli.” I got goosebumps, and I began to believe that he was really going to win. It’s exactly those kind of moments that always get you as a fan. When you really believe that a player will realize their potential and win the match no one thought they could. And though Feli did not defeat Federer today, he did prove that he could. That he is more than a pretty face with emo attitude. That when his game is on, he has the potential to beat anyone, on any surface. Even clay. So although he did not win the match, he did win back a wayward fan. Thanks, Felite, for reminding me just how good you can be.

Charity Soccer Match for Japan Pic Spam

I hope you were lucky enough last night to watch the stream of the charity soccer match for Japan last night. Yes, the stream was only two inches big, but the commentator was hands down the most unintentionally hilarious commie I have ever had the privilege to listen to. He did not let the fact that he only knew Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic’s names stop him from calling the action. Nope, he just called everyone Novak or Andy. Ferru was Novak, Dolgo was Andy, even Jo was Novak. JO WILLY TSONGA. Sigh…

Needless to say the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers kicked the tennis pro’s collective asses 5-2. Not that it was a fair fight, because the tennis guys did not want to get injured. Highlights of the match were Fer and Muzz miserably failing to score goals, but the best moment was when a very giggly Marcos Baghdatis was fouled and scored the Tennis All-Stars first goal on a penalty kick. It was totally adorable and will probably result in Baggy losing his first round match due to said foul. But hey, it was all for charity, folks.

Here are some pictorial highlights of the match for you viewing pleasure:

Failed hi-five: check. Frizzy fro: check. Never change, Muzz, never change.
Check out the guy in red’s face. It totally says it all…yikes
Ferru’s mane blowing in the breeze
Is this proper footie technique or as painful as it looks?
Melzer was there. I’m only including this pic for Josh. You’re welcome
Why no tongue action when you play tennis, Nole? Now I feel deprived
Isn’t Rafa too young for high-waisted shorts?
Why does Jo look like a lumbering old man?
I will leave you with sweaty Ferru, Feli, and Vik. Though can someone explain to me why Feli is holding sunglasses? Who does he think he is, Corey Hart?

Rafa Jams to the Music, Fer Pops a Squat (videos)

Rafa was really enjoying the tunes during Feli’s DC singles match…

Love how Fer’s laughing at him.

Speaking of Fer, watch him literally pop a squat during the Armada’s celebration dance

I so want a gif of that. Get on it, people.

He’s a Man Eater

Not only did Rafa demolish Bemelmans in a rubber that counted on Day 1 of the tie, he came back for the dead rubber today and swept aside the remaining Rochi. Rafa shows no mercy when it comes to Davis Cup.
The tie against Belgium was a complete sweep for Spain. Well, almost…
Oh Feli…..
