Kiss My…Trophy: #jankosigh Edition

A couple months ago, Tipsarevic was the highest ranked player without a title. And he was mercilessly ridiculed for it. He was labeled a choker, a headcase, a “big match” player who would never be able to string the wins together to win a title. And everyone wore the “I have as many titles as Janko” joke into the ground.

Well, who’s laughing now, bitches! After popping his title cherry at Kuala Lumpur (d. Baghdatis 6-4, 7-5), Tipsy added to his trophy collection today by defeating his buddy Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-2 at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Who would have thought that our little sighing Janko would win two titles so quickly, AND in straight sets?

Even these two did not quite believe it. Yep, that’s your name, son

And in other trophy news, Gael Monfils won Dancing with the Stars, and took home the world famous mirrorball trophy.

Heh, that is he won the Stockholm Open over Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Oh those Swedes, what else can you expect from the land that brought us ABBA.

Stepanek & Monfils Legg Mason Finals Press Conferences (Videos)

After much cursing at YouTube and my computer, here are the full press conferences from the Legg Mason finals. I asked Stepanek about waving the Czech flag. I thought it was a legit question since I have only seen patriotic displays like that at Davis Cup. Not sure how that indicated support for his team as opposed to his country, but whatever you say, Radek.

I think this US Open series may just be the summer of the veteran, with Fish (29 yrs old) taking Atlanta and Steps (32 yrs old) winning DC. It’s interesting to see how maturity and experience is increasingly becoming a major factor on tour.

Speaking of maturity, that is what impressed, and surprised, me the most about Monfils this past week. No showboating antics on court, and thoughtful, insightful answers at the press conferences. I wonder if we are going to see a new Gael from now on. If he can maintain this new-found maturity, we will definitely be seeing Monfils in more finals.

Gael Monfils vs. John Isner Legg Mason Semifinal Highlights (Video)

Despite the massive rain delays, the semifinal match between Gael Monfils and John Isner at Legg Mason was high quality stuff. Check out some highlights of the match that I shot between the raindrops.

And the hug at the end at net? Heartwarming stuff :)

The World According to Gael Monfils (Video)

I have been pleasantly surprised and entertained by Monfils’ press conferences this week, and his quarterfinal presser at Legg Mason last night was full of Gaelisms. Monfils perception is…well…perhaps not quite on point with what we might think of him, his personality, actions, etc.

Watch the full press conference above, but some choice quotes:

On playing Isner: [I need to] be very relaxed becayse playing against John is tough…just to chill and when I get the opportunity, take it

On his coaching situation (via @MariyaKTennis for Talk About Tennis): It’s not that difficult, I think, to coach me. Everyone knows where is my weaknesses are.

On playing on the big stage (via @linzsports for OnTheGoTennis): It will be fun tomorrow for sure…it’s on, you know…it’s a good mix, his game and my game, it’s like a pure attacker, and a go to the net and volley and run, slide, passing. Love it.

Gael Monfils 3rd Round Legg Mason Press Conference (Video)

This was the most mature I think I have ever heard Monfils. Wanting to practice 30 minutes more a day? Knowing what he needs to do to get to the top? Good to hear.

Very respectful answer about Roger Rasheed, and he talks about his new coach (who is not so new).

I did not get to ask him my question (the presser was packed), but hopefully I will next round.

Kubot Can-Cans. Again. (Video)

Kubot danced the can-can to celebrate his win today over Monfils, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Honestly, I still have recurring nightmares from the last time he whipped this dance out at a grand slam. But kudos to Lukasz on the biggest win of his career.

Oof

Not the best day for many players today in Rome. In a surprise to, frankly, no one, Roddick lost in straight sets to Simon, 6-3, 6-3. Andy has now lost 4 matches in a row. Oy vey. Well, at least clay season is almost over, right?

Dolgopolov also lost 6-3, 6-3 today to Starace. After such a strong start to the year, especially in the Latin clay court season, I thought Dolly would have done more damage on the European clay. Hopefully he will turn it around by the French Open.

And in probably the worst news of the day, Gael Monfils and Kei Nishikori, who were due to play each other, both had to pull out of the tournament. Gael is apparently still suffering from le fromage and Kei is suffering from kidney stones. That sounds incredibly painful, best wishes for a fast recovery.

Players Awqwardly Reading Cue Cards (video)

You would think someone would move the cue cards so that their eyeline would be in line with the camera. You would think wrong… At least it’s for charity

ATP Sesame Street

Maybe it’s a sign that I have been hanging out too much with my nieces, or pehaps sleep deprivation from watching the Australian Open has completely addled my brain, but many of our favorite players are starting to look a whole lot like our friends from Sesame Street.

Don’t believe me? Take a look
