Boy Asks Djokovic to Marry Him (Video)

During Djokovic’s practice at the US Open, a little boy in the crowd shouted, “Will you marry me.” One would have expected this to either have been politely ignored or perhaps to have elicited uncomfortable laughter from the crowd (yes, even in this day and age).

Instead, Novak invited the boy onto the court, let him hit with his racquet, and gave him a huge hug.

Now, I would not necessarily classify tennis as a homophobic sport (feel free to disagree with me), but how huge is it for one of the top players in the game and defending champion of the slam to so openly and lovingly embrace him? When most jocks would shun anything that would even hint to being associated in any way with homosexuality, even Novak’s biggest detractors have to give him a standing O here. Djokovic’s actions here speak far more loudly for love and acceptance than anything he could ever say. Although he has done many great things on a tennis court, this may be the one action that makes me the most proud to say that I am his fan.

Djokovic on Live with Regis and Kelly (Video)

Shockingly, Regis did not completely murder Novak’s name. “Djoh-koh-vick”? Good enough!

I believe Regis watched the tennis, but Kelly? Girl, your previous acting experience on soaps did not help to convince me that you watched the match. “It was very exciting to watch you play. It was a great thrill for me.” I mean, really? No one’s buying it, Ripa.

And Novak celebrated took the morning off from the gluten free to have a bagel in NYC? A boy after my own heart.

Kids Cheering for Djokovic Until They Realize He’s Not Rafa (video)

You are a die-hard Djokovic fan. You decide your whole family should partake of your Nole love, so you try to teach your kids who he is. You put the US Open final on tv for them to watch. They love to jump around and say Djokovic’s name (Go Djokovic!). Your plan has worked out perfectly…that is until they realize that they thought Rafa was Djokovic. And they love Rafa more. Typical.

And no, before anyone asks, these are not my kids…

Djokovic Wins USO, Caps Off an Amazing Year

If someone had told me a year ago after Djokovic’s loss to Nadal in the US Open final that he would come back and win the title next year, I would have been thrilled. If you had told me that he would win three out of the four grand slams, I would have thought you were unrealistically optimistic (I mean, have you watched my Nole?). And if you had told me that not only would he win three slams, but would be 64-2 for the season and 6-0 over Nadal in finals, I would want to know what you were smoking.

This has been an unbelievable year for Djokovic. As a fan, watching Nole this year has been a mixture of pure joy and dread. I mean, this cannot last…can it? Being a Djokovic fan had been all about highs and lows and unnecessary drama. And there has been a whole lot of amazing highs this year. So just how bad will the lows be? Or has Novak finally learned to manage himself and matured enough that there may be dips, but no more heartbreaking lows?

Of course, it is not just Djokovic who has a say in whether he wins or loses. The guys on the other side of the net will have a say too. Do not let that scoreline from the final fool you; Nadal battled hard and made Novak beat him. Rafa figured out how to beat Federer in finals. There is no doubt that he will come back next year ready to fight.

But for now, let’s just enjoy the great ride that this year has been before it’s over. It’s been fun to watch you this year, Novak. And no matter what happens in the future, no one can take away what you have accomplished in 2011.

Roddick “Baffled” (Video)

I’m hearing this video described as Roddick having a tantrum/outburst/etc. about the court conditions on Armstrong. Not the case, but can you blame him for being annoyed at the tournament for not handling the situation well? Can’t play on a damaged court…

McEnroe Rants about Players’ Lack of Power (Video)

In case you have not heard about the hullabaloo about what happened at the US Open today, the players were brought on to start their matches today even though it was still misting and the courts were still wet. After a few games, play was suspended. The courts really were in no shape to be played on, and the players probably should not have been brought out at all.

After his match was called, Rafa was heard to say, “It’s the same old story, all you think about is money” (I’m paraphrasing what he was quoted to have said on twitter, have yet to find the exact quote). Rafa, Andy Murray, and Andy Roddick together with the tournament referee Brian Earley met to voice their complaints about being made to play on the wet courts.

In this video is from the ESPN 2 broadcast, John McEnroe gives a brief history about the power struggle with the players, the tournament directors, and the ATP. Interesting stuff. I realized that the players do not have a real union, but I thought that the ATP was at least protecting the players to some extent. Apparently not.

We all want the games to be played, and I sympathize with the USTA for trying to get some of the matches started at least, but the safety of the players should never be jeopardized.

Roddick Sits in Wrong Chair (Video)

I know I’m late on this one, but in his match against Benneteau yesterday at the US Open, Roddick sat down on the change-over in Benny’s chair. Love that Rod thought Benny was coming over to shake hands and retire….Whoopsie

Has anyone ever seen a player sit in the wrong chair before? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before.
